2016 Spring Fling
PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA
The Southern California HCSC Social Club held its annual Palm Springs fling February 17th thru 19th in Palm Spring, Ca. Accommodations were at the Hilton Palm Springs Resort, arranged by Ron Salzetti, VP Activities. The three day event was held in pleasant desert spring temperatures.
The event started Wednesday evening the 17th with the opening night Reception at the Lodge of the Four Seasons in Palm Springs. Ross and Marilyn Willour made the arrangements for this venue as they have for the past many years. They negotiate with their gated community for our use of the facility. Marilyn works on setting the room for our party. And Ross works with the caterer for all of the refreshments. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. Gerri Burt and Pat Fitzpatrick greeted everyone at the door and assisted them with their name badges. Sixty five members and guests attended the gathering where all caught up on recent travels and adventures.
One of the highlights of the first night event is the Memorabilia Table. This table set up near the entrance to the reception allowing guests to share with the group their mementos from years gone by. The idea was pioneered by Betty Bidwell some time back. This year Dick Scoville packed his van with trophies, plaques and other items that he collected throughout his career and he willing shared them with the group.
As in the past the buffet lines received a lot of attention as guests filed through several times. The bar remained open for 3 hours as all enjoyed their favorite adult beverage.
Several members and guests traveled significant distances to Palm Springs for the event. Bill and Karen Miller came down from Clovis in Northern California. Dave and Jan Small attended from Cave Creek in Arizona. Gary Linger came from Oregon. Tom and Kathleen Cotton and Doug and Barbara Rush traveled from Washington. And the great state of Texas was represented by Rudy and Diana Melendez, Mike and Flo Ray, and Ron and Ruth Winkler.
Many activities were arranged on Thursday including a golf tournament, the McCallum Theatre featuring the Jersey Boys and some special tours around the Coachella Valley. The tours available were Village Green, Living Desert Museum, Palm Springs Air Museum, and Modernism Week. These day trips were all organized by Marilyn Willour.
The winners of the two golf tournaments staged at the Cimmaron Golf Resort were:
- On the Boulder Course the team of Jeff Paige, Bill McGrath, and Ross Willour.
- On the Pebble Course the team of Les Olander, Al Rogers and Larry Noble.
One of the highlights of the Spring Fling was the Thursday night performance of the Jersey Boys at the McCallum Theatre in nearby Palm Desert. The performance, one of their 6 “sold out” nights at the theatre, was spectacular and it was rendered to a full and appreciative audience.
The HCSC Foundation and the Southern California HCSC Social club conducted business meetings Friday morning. The Foundation approved several new eligible applicants for financial assistance. John Liddle, Foundation Investment Advisor, reported on the “state of the Foundation assets” and made recommendations for changes in future investments.
Later Friday morning President Mark Schultz of the social club welcomed and thanked everyone at the departing brunch staged at the Hilton. Schultz also announced the planned events for 2016 including:
. The 5th Annual Partners BBQ on May 21 at Lake Mission Viejo
. A day at the races at the beautiful Del Mar Racetrack in San Diego on Saturday, August 6
